Trikala the Ideal Destination

The Heart of The Mainland

This is an exceptionally mountainous prefecture attracting many visitors each year. Picturesque villages scattered throughout the area, rivers, gorges, small waterfalls and rich vegetation are its main characteristics. Built by the Litheos River, the capital Trikala lies on the site of the Homeric Trikki, believed to be the birthplace of Aesculapius, which explains the existence of the oldest sanctuary to the physician deity SW of the town. Crowned by a Byzantine castle (the Fortress), the town is divided in two by an old aqueduct. The castle, not far from the temple of Aesculapius, was built on Hellenistic ruins and underwent many changes during the Ottoman occupation. A walk up the hill of Profitis Ilias is rewarded with a magnificent view over the valley and the picture-perfect villages traversed by the river. The Byzantine churches of Aghios Demetrios and Aghii Anargyri have splendid frescoes and are worth a visit.
